West Virginia reports 8,428 active COVID cases, 22 new deaths on Monday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 8,428 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 609 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (75), Barbour (48), Lewis (93), Randolph (77) and Webster (46) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of six active cases over the weekend.

Twenty-two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 60-year old male from Upshur County, an 85-year old female from Ritchie County, a 56-year old female from Taylor County, a 69-year old male from Preston County, a 63-year old male from Berkeley County, a 51-year old male from Mercer County, an 84-year old male from Randolph County, a 51-year old male from Fayette County, a 49-year old male from Cabell County, an 85-year old male from Clay County, an 84-year old female from Marshall County, a 55-year old male from Mercer County, a 62-year old female from Jackson County, a 45-year old male from Monroe County, an 80-year old male from Marshall County, a 75-year old male from Raleigh County, a 73-year old male from Hancock County, a 77-year old female from Marshall County, a 61-year old female from Raleigh County, a 64-year old male from Mingo County, a 52-year old female from Wetzel County, and a 79-year old male from Fayette County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 13, 2021, there are currently 8,428 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 22 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,107 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 633 residents are hospitalized with the virus (82% unvaccinated, 18% vaccinated), with 201 currently in intensive care (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated) and 123 on a ventilator (85% unvaccinated, 15% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 11.82%.

A total of 906,937 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said. That’s about 51% of the state.
