West Virginia reports 422 active COVID cases, seven new deaths on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 422 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 27 since the last report. 

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (4), Barbour (2), Lewis (1), Randolph (8) and Webster (2) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of four active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 67-year old female from Taylor County, a 73-year old male from Mercer County, an 80-year old male from Fayette County, a 75-year old female from Hampshire County, an 88-year old female from Kanawha County, a 59-year old male from Fayette County, and a 90-year old male from Mercer County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of March 24, 2022, there are currently 422 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been seven deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,687 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 193 residents are hospitalized with the virus (61% unvaccinated, 39% vaccinated), with 48 currently in intensive care (67% unvaccinated, 33% vaccinated) and 30 on a ventilator (73% unvaccinated, 27% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 1.29%. 

A total of 967,398 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said. That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 420,442 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
