West Virginia reports 2,501 active COVID cases, three new deaths on Monday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 2,501 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 205 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (31), Barbour (23), Lewis (9), Randolph (21) and Webster (7) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of six active cases over the weekend. 

Three additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 86-year old male from Lewis County, an 83-year old female from Wood County, and an 85-year old female from Braxton County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 23, 2022, there are currently 2,501 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been three deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,918 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 152 residents are hospitalized with the virus (45% unvaccinated, 55% vaccinated), with 19 currently in intensive care (32% unvaccinated, 68% vaccinated) and 11 on a ventilator (46% unvaccinated, 54% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 9.22%. 

A total of 977,637 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 492,498 booster doses have been administered.
