West Virginia reports 175 new COVID-19 cases, one additional death on Monday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 175 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (2), Barbour (5), Lewis (4), Randolph (5) and Webster (3) counties.

A total of 26 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

One additional death has been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 64-year old male from Putnam County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 17, 2021, there have been 2,842,127 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 158,643 total cases and 2,762 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 6,296 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 149,585 people have recovered and 2,762 have died. The daily percent positive was 5.44%.

A total of 702,043 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said. That’s about 39% of the state.
