West Virginia reports 1,343 active COVID cases, two new deaths on Monday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 1,343 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 229 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (22), Barbour (11), Lewis (7), Randolph (11) and Webster (4) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of three active cases over the weekend. 

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 66-year old female from Berkeley County and an 83-year old female from Hampshire County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 9, 2022, there are currently 1,343 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been two deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,882 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 101 residents are hospitalized with the virus (55% unvaccinated, 45% vaccinated), with 25 currently in intensive care (68% unvaccinated, 32% vaccinated) and 16 on a ventilator (69% unvaccinated, 31% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 8.91%. 

A total of 975,425 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. About 477,743 booster doses have been administered.
