West Virginia reports 13,268 active COVID cases, seven new deaths on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 13,268 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 1,856 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (106), Barbour (45), Lewis (44), Randolph (171) and Webster (14) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of five active cases in the last 24 hours.

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 61-year old female from Jefferson County, a 63-year old male from Ohio County, a 68-year old male from Lewis County, a 41-year old male from Berkeley County, a 78-year old female from Kanawha County, a 71-year old male from Kanawha County, and a 66-year old female from Taylor County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of January 11, 2022, there are currently 13,268 COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been seven deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,452 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 815 residents are hospitalized with the virus (76% unvaccinated, 24% vaccinated), with 224 currently in intensive care (83% unvaccinated, 17% vaccinated) and 133 on a ventilator (91% unvaccinated, 9% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 19.59%.

A total of 940,226 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said. That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 356,141 have received their booster.
