West Virginia opens online permit portal; faster processing starts in January

West Virginia businesses can now apply for permits, pay fees and track applications in one online account at SpeedToBuild.wv.gov. Faster processing for eligible permits begins January 1, 2027, and the portal becomes required for covered permits July 1, 2027.

West Virginia businesses can now apply for permits, pay fees and check application status in one account at SpeedToBuild.wv.gov. The new One Stop Shop Permitting Portal is optional until July 1, 2027.

Faster processing options for eligible permits begin January 1, 2027, according to an October 28 release from the governor’s office. For example, processing deadlines will drop from five days to two for oversized hauling permits and from 14 calendar days to seven business days for timber license renewals.

“Businesses shouldn’t have to spend unnecessary time navigating government bureaucracy when they could be creating jobs and growing their operations,” Governor Patrick Morrisey said in the release.

Businesses may keep using paper applications or existing agency systems without penalty until July 1, 2027. The portal then becomes mandatory for covered permits, with exceptions under applicable disability and human rights laws.

To create an account, select “Sign Up” on the portal. Add Speedtobuilddonotreply@wv.gov to your contacts for application updates. The portal’s searchable database and guided assistant can help you work out which permits you need. Questions about a specific permit go to the agency that issues it, through the portal’s resource guide.
