BUCKHANNON, West Virginia – Following his appearance in October, Latin Jazz percussionist Yamil Conga is making a return visit to West Virginia Wesleyan College March 11-12.
Conga tours nationally and internationally bringing educational lectures on the conga drum and salsa music. A native of Puerto Rico, Conga now resides in Nashville where he is the conguero for the Nashville Salsa Machine, Roland Barber, Souvenir, Lalo Davila and Friends and jazz pianist Tyron Hamilton, percussionist for The Mr. Moons band, drummer for Tod Gnovsky and back-up drummer for Reckless. Conga is also the musical director and band leader for Alison Brazil.
WVWC’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will host Conga for Salsa and Sangria dance parties and a lecture and demonstration. On Saturday, March 11, the Salsa and Sangria Dance Party will kick off from 7-9 p.m. with Caribbean food. The menu includes jerk chicken, black beans and rice, tortillas, chips and salsa and (non-alcoholic) sangria. This event is free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted. The event will be held in the Social Hall on the third floor of the Benedum Campus Center.
On Sunday, March 12, Conga will give a Latin Jazz Percussion lecture and demonstration from 6-7 p.m. followed by a Salsa and Sangria dance party from 7-8 p.m. in the Social Hall. This event is also open to the public.
