Wesleyan women trounce Davis & Elkins, 59-40

ELKINS — The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats scored 13 points fewer that its season average of 72 but its defense, second in the Mountain East Conference, held the Senators to only 40 points and Wesleyan picked up its eleventh win overall (11-5) and seventh in the conference to maintain a third-place position in the MEC table, behind leader Fairmont State and Glenville State with a 59-40 victory, Saturday.

The Lady Bobcats’ Emma Witt continued to mass points in her junior year in which she has already passed 1,000 career points. She led all scorers with 22, and had five assists and two rebounds.

On the defensive end, Wesleyan’s Desiree Roy destroyed the boards, ripping down 21 total rebounds, a career-best, and added 14 points and an assist. Roy now has 129 rebounds for the season, placing her sixth in the MEC.

Shelby Genes scored her conference average of 12 points which places her fifteenth in the MEC.

For Davis & Elkins, Jahniya Marion led the effort with 14 points and three rebounds. As a team, the Senators’ defense continued a pattern that has highlighted a struggle for the Lady Bobcats: offensive rebounds. D&E had 19 second chance efforts while Wesleyan blocked out for just nine.

The Lady Bobcats travel to Salem University Wednesday, Jan. 29 for a 5:30 p.m. start with the Tigers.
