Wesleyan women picked fifth in South Division in MEC preseason soccer poll

Frostburg State and Charleston were picked to win the MEC North and South preseason women’s soccer divisions, respectively, with West Virginia Wesleyan chosen fifth in the South.

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Frostburg State University and the University of Charleston have been picked to repeat as division champions in the Mountain East Conference preseason women’s soccer poll, which was released Wednesday. 

Frostburg State was selected to win the MEC North Division and UC was voted as the MEC South Division favorite, according to a vote of league head coaches. 

Nine of 11 coaches placed Frostburg State atop the division. The Bobcats finished 15-4-2 overall last season and 11-1-2 in MEC play. Frostburg State received nine of 11 first-place votes. The Golden Eagles, who were 16-6-0 overall and 13-2-0 in MEC play last season, received six first-place votes. 

In the North, Fairmont State received the other two first-place votes and trailed Frostburg State’s 49 points with 42 of its own. West Liberty (28 points), Point Park (23 points), and Wheeling (18 points) rounded out the division rankings. 

In the South, Charleston totaled 56 points, finishing ahead of defending MEC tournament champion West Virginia State (49 points) and Concord (48 points). The Yellow Jackets received two first-place votes, while the Mountain Lions received three. The bottom half of the South Division are Glenville State, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Davis & Elkins. 

The MEC women’s soccer season begins Thursday, Sept. 4 with six teams competing in non-conference games.
