BUCKHANNON — The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team fell in straight sets (23–25, 16–25, 25–27) to Frostburg State on Friday evening at Rockefeller Center. Despite a late push in the third frame, the Lady Bobcats couldn’t complete the comeback, falling to 13–7 overall and 5–3 in Mountain East Conference play.
The opening set featured seven ties and two lead changes as both teams traded early runs. Wesleyan’s balanced attack from MacKenna Halfin and Bhrooke Axe helped the Lady Bobcats stay even through the middle stages. Halfin’s efficient hitting (.471 on the night) and Axe’s presence at the net kept the set close, but Frostburg capitalized on a late surge to take it, 25–23.
The second set saw Frostburg build momentum behind strong blocking and service pressure. Wesleyan managed 13 kills in the frame but was plagued by six attack errors and four service errors. Setter Claire Wheeler distributed 13 assists in the set and finished with 31 total, while libero Alexis Moeschler anchored the back row with 14 digs. Frostburg pulled away late for a 25–16 win to go up two sets to none.
Wesleyan responded with its most competitive stretch of the night. The Lady Bobcats rallied behind Halfin’s heavy swings and Emonie Fennell’s .250 attack percentage. The set included seven ties and four lead changes, with Wesleyan forcing extra points before Frostburg closed the match, 27–25.
As a team, Wesleyan posted 38 kills, 31 assists, and 52 digs while hitting .104. Frostburg countered with a .162 hitting percentage and a 51–45 edge in total points.
Wesleyan hosts MEC rival Fairmont State University in The Rock Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission is Free.
