Wesleyan swimmers finish fourth at Corbiere Merion Invite

DELAWARE, Ohio. — The West Virginia Wesleyan swim teams traveled to Ohio on Saturday (Nov. 19) and Sunday (Nov. 20) to compete in the 12th Annual Corbiere Merion Invite.

On the women’s side, sophomore Alayna Crane started off the top placements coming in second in the 500 yard freestyle with senior Lillie Archer coming right behind her with times of 5:39.80 and 5:47.47. Alienor Dalle then set the standards for herself when she won her event, 100 yard butterfly, hitting the wall in 1:01.09. The relay team consisting of Dalle, Morgan Bennet, Annalise Gentilozzi, and Crane came in second place in the 400 yard freestyle with a time of 3:53.68. Gentilozzi continued the high standards set by her teammates when the freshman came in third in the 200 yard IM reaching the wall with 2:25.88 on the clock. Junior swimmer, Dalle, continued her successful day when she saw herself coming in at 57.48 in the 100 yard freestyle placing her in third place. Dalle was not done just yet; the junior came in second place in the 200 yard butterfly at 2:31.02. Crane added points to her team when she finished in third place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:19.63. Relay team consisted of Crane, Jennifer Williams, Dalle, and Bennet placed third in the 400 yard medley relay. Swimmers Crane (26.33) and Dalle (26.69) combined for points in the 50 yard freestyle coming in at second and third place. Senior swimmer Archer, put up some big points for her team when she came in second in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 20:10.32.

On the men’s side, Ben Esposito placed sixth with a time of 1:04.20 in the 100 yard breaststroke and fourth in the 200 yard breaststroke coming in at 2:21.76. The senior also placed sixth in the 100 yard IM. Sophomore Nick Gerosa placed fifth in the 100 yard backstroke coming in at a time of 58.78 and also placed fifth in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.22. Jack Gutekunst placed sixth in the 100 yard freestyle.

The women’s swimming team placed fourth in the invitational while the men’s team placed fourth as well.

The WVWC swimming teams will hit the road on Saturday (Jan. 14) for a meet versus Frostburg at 1 p.m.
