Wesleyan baseball drops all four games to Concord in weekend series

ATHENS — The West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats traveled to Athens, W.Va. and faced off against the Concord University Mountain Lions Saturday and Sunday for a four-game set. They lost all four games, dropping 8-5 and 7-2 contests on Saturday and losing 8-1 and 11-6 games on Sunday.

Game 1 Saturday

Zack Saryeldin and Demetri Jamison of the Concord Mountain Lions helped lead the way for Concord as they both tallied seven of their eight runs scored and both went 2-3.

Late heroics from Wesleyan were simply not enough to get past the Mountain Lions. After trailing 8-2 in the top of the seventh thanks to RBIs from Cole Shearer and Thatcher Poteat, the Bobcats were able to come up with three more runs because of a one-run single from Eddie Rueda and a two-run single from Jack Tilton.

The comeback was then put to an end as the Bobcats dropped the first game of the series 8-5.

Alex Hernandez was the losing pitcher from Wesleyan and Andrew Neff was the winning pitcher from Concord.

Game 2 Saturday

In game two, Michael Dupont, who went 4-4 with three runs and an RBI, and catcher Marshall Basham, who went 3-4 with a run, paved the way for the Mountain Lions to accumulate seven total runs off 12 hits.

The Bobcats were able to put up nine hits, but these only amounted to two runs with RBI doubles from Shearer and Tilton to lose 7-2 and to move to 0-2 in the series.

Broderick Rohrbaugh was the losing pitcher and Eddie Blake got the win.

Game 1 Sunday

Game three marked a new day for baseball, but Concord kept the bats hot as they scored eight runs off 11 hits with two RBIs from Jamison, three RBIs from Saryeldin, and a three-run home run from Chris Satcher.

Wesleyan played the worst they had played in the series by scoring only one run off five hits with an RBI single from Tilton and lost the third game of the series 8-1.

Anthony Hernandez was the losing pitcher for Wesleyan and Rylee Nicholas got the win for Concord.

Game 2 Sunday

The final game of the series was a dogfight as Wesleyan competed to take the final game of the series and avoid getting swept.

The Bobcats jumped out early in the top of the first with an RBI from Poteat to make it 1-0.

Concord was quick to answer back in the bottom of the first as they retaliated with one run from Jamison’s RBI double to tie it 1-1.

In the top of the second, Josh Ayala smacked an RBI double to score Matt Neach to give Wesleyan the lead again.

Concord regained the lead again in the bottom of the second and third by putting up five runs to make it 6-2.

Through the top of the fourth and fifth inning, the Bobcats managed to put up three runs from solo home runs from Shearer and Ryan Drag, and a sac fly from Grant Shumaker to make it 5-6.

The bottom of the fifth and sixth inning is when the Mountain Lions added some much-needed insurance by putting up five runs to extend their lead to six.

In the top of the seventh, Wesleyan was only able to put up one run with an RBI from Drag and lose the last game of the series 11-6

Hunter Eplin was the losing pitcher and Jake Robinson was the winning pitcher.

Wesleyan looks to snap its seven-game losing streak by taking on the University of Charleston in a four-game set at home on Saturday, Apr. 20 and Sunday, Apr. 21. Game times for both doubleheaders is 1 p.m.
