WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital to celebrate students at MedEd Signing Day

BUCKHANNON — WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital, in partnership with Upshur County Schools and the Education Alliance, will celebrate local students taking the next step toward healthcare careers during the MedEd Signing Day Ceremony.

The ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, in the Buckhannon-Upshur High School auditorium.

The MedEd program, a high school career pathway initiative, connects students with hands-on learning experiences and career opportunities in healthcare, helping build a local workforce for the future.

“Signing day is a milestone moment, not just for students, but for the communities investing in their future,” said Dr. Amelia Courts. “The MedEd program reflects a shared commitment to building strong, sustainable career pathways in West Virginia.”

Students participating in the ceremony will formally commit to continuing their education and career journeys in healthcare-related fields, marking a transition from classroom learning to real-world application.

“This event is a proud moment for our students and our school community,” said Katie Woofter. “Through programs like MedEd, our students are gaining valuable experience, building confidence, and stepping into meaningful career paths that can make a real difference right here in our community.”

WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital has supported the MedEd program locally by providing mentorship, exposure to healthcare careers and opportunities for students to engage directly with clinical and non-clinical teams.

“This is exactly the kind of investment that strengthens rural healthcare,” said John Forester, interim president and CEO of WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital. “By supporting students early and giving them a clear path forward, we’re helping to ensure the long-term health and vitality of our region.”

The ceremony is open to invited guests, with doors opening at 1:15 p.m.
