Upshur County Sheriff’s Office arrests fugitive from justice found with cocaine, cash

BUCKHANNON — On Monday, January 22, 2024, Upshur County deputies observed a Silver 2008 Dodge Dakota traveling at speeds in excess of the posted speed limit, crossing over the yellow/white lines multiple times, according to a press release from the office.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop on the Dakota near the Buckhannon Antique Mall on Route 20 North in Upshur County, W.Va. UCSO identified the driver as Mark Andrew Maxwell and the passenger as Coleman Ray Young Jr.

The Upshur Communications Center advised that Young had a full extradition felony warrant for possession of cocaine from Virginia. After Young was placed in handcuffs, UCSO located a small bag that contained a hard white substance in his shirt pocket. Young allegedly admitted that it was cocaine.

Maxwell then allegedly admitted he had a methamphetamine smoking device in his pocket. During the search of Maxwell, UCSO located multiple snort straws, aluminum foil with burnt residue on it, and a bag with a white crystal-like substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine. UCSO also located a sum of U.S. currency, which belonged to Young, in the passenger area of the vehicle.

Young was arrested for the outstanding felony warrant and possession of cocaine. Maxwell was arrested for possession of methamphetamine. Maxwell and Young were then transported to Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
