Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Beta Chapter partnered with Upshur County second graders to plant marigolds in a student-centered project designed to build community pride.

The project, titled “Marigold Magic,” began with second graders germinating marigold seeds in their classrooms. Later, they planted the flowers in designated areas throughout the city and county.

Planting sites included Jawbone Park, the Buckhannon Fire Department, Buckhannon City Hall, the Charles W. Gibson Jr. Public Library, outside the county dog park and Rock Cave’s Gold Star Memorial Square.

Fred Brooks Garden Club and Stargazers Garden Club assisted Delta Kappa Gamma with the community-wide project.

Buckhannon horticulturalist Dixie Green provided seed trays, some grow lights and warmers for the classrooms, and helped prepare sites for planting. Delta Kappa Gamma provided signs to accompany the students’ marigolds.

Planting was done in early May before the West Virginia Strawberry Festival.

Throughout the summer and into next fall, students and the community will be able to see “Marigold Magic,” an Upshur County second grade project, in full bloom.
