Four FFA members from Upshur County traveled to WVU Jackson’s Mill on April 11 to take part in the Beef Stockman’s Contest at the West Virginia Beef Expo. This competitive event tested students’ knowledge and skills in various aspects of the beef industry.
Participants completed four live animal evaluation classes, three placing classes, a questions class based on cattle placing, a quality assurance class, breed identification, retail meat identification, and plant species identification.
“This was my first time at the Beef Expo, and I learned so much about evaluating livestock,” said team member Gregory Stripling. “It was a great opportunity.” Catie Hoover shared, “The cattle grading class was my favorite. It gave me a real-world perspective on what producers look for in feeder calves.”
Emma Quick added, “Being able to identify retail meat cuts and plant species pushed me out of my comfort zone—but it helped me grow.”
Team member Kristian Hissam summed it up by saying, “This competition showed me how many different skills are involved in the beef industry. I’m proud of how our team worked together.”
Teams consisted of four members each, and students represented their chapter with pride, gaining valuable experience and preparing for future careers in agriculture.
