Three Bucs go a perfect 8-0 at Musselman Wrestling Duals Tournament

INWOOD – The Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Buccaneers had three grapplers go a perfect 8-0 in the two-day Musselman Duals held last Friday and Saturday.

Liam Garcia (120 pounds), Aidan Wilson (126 pounds) and Tucker Hurst (138 pounds) were unbeaten posting 8-0 marks.

Alex Bennett (285 pounds) also was perfect at the tournament going 5-0

“Alex made his debut since the state wrestling tournament last spring where he suffered a season ending injury,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jacob Orr. “He’s been chomping at the bit to compete and we finally unleashed him this past weekend.”

Nathan Cornett (145 pounds) and Luke Bohnsack (152 pounds) also had strong outings as both wrestlers went 7-1.

The six wrestlers helped the Bucs compile a 6-2 record placing ninth overall out of 24 and claiming the third-place pool.

The Bucs just missed out on a 7-1 mark as they lost by a single point to Williamsport (Va.) 40-39. Their other loss was to an out-of-state opponent as well as they dropped a 45-26 decision to Linganore (Md.).

They racked up their six wins against Potomac (Va.) 61-17, Martinsburg, 64-18, Washington, 38-33, Southern Garrett (Md.), 47-27, Smithsburg (Md.) 64-12 and Bethasda-Chevy Chase (Md.) 16.

Three other Bucs posted winning records as Nathaniel Tyson (106 pounds) and Ian Cornett (113 pounds) both went 6-2 while J.T. Thompson (220) went 5-3.

Brodee Kennedy (132 pounds) and Oscar Blonn (182 pounds) both went 4-4 while Trevor Miller-Waycastor (170 pounds) and Caden Barger (195 pounds) both notched 2-6 marks.

“Trevor is wrestling 10 pounds above his weight and battles each and every match,” said Orr.

Trevur Randolph (160 pounds) went 0-1 before he was injured at the tournament and Eli Hockinberry took over in that weight class as the freshman went 1-3.

“Eli stepped up to the 160-pound weight class after Trevur got hurt,” noted Orr. “He was undersized in that weight class but did an awesome job.”

Orr said he was pleased with how his team performed in the eastern panhandle.

“This tournament was a ton of fun,” concluded Orr. “There was a lot of awesome wrestling and good matches. I felt our guys showed up and competed well.”

The Bucs will be back in action Wednesday in a quad at Parkersburg High School.
