Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston received funding for an artificial intelligence note-taking tool, while Broaddus Hospital in Philippi secured funding for a telehealth pilot serving rural skilled nursing residents.
Governor Patrick Morrisey announced the awards Sept. 30 during a visit to Stonewall Jackson. They are part of more than $3.2 million awarded through the West Virginia Rural Health Transformation Program, according to a release from his office.
The governor’s office describes the tool as AI-powered “ambient clinical listening technology” intended to ease clinicians’ paperwork and leave more time for patients. Four other hospitals received funding for the same technology: Mon Health Marion Neighborhood Hospital, Preston Memorial Hospital, Plateau Medical Center and Webster Memorial Hospital.
At Broaddus, the Mansfield Place TeleHub Pilot is intended to connect rural skilled nursing residents with specialists, behavioral health services and urgent clinical consultations through telemedicine, the release says.
“From reducing paperwork for providers to strengthening care coordination and expanding workforce capacity, these investments are designed to improve outcomes for patients and communities throughout our state,” Secretary of Health Arvin Singh said in the release.
Vandalia Health also received funding aimed at more than 100 healthcare staffing placements. The release says the award will help rural hospitals and clinics address staffing shortages and recruit and retain healthcare workers.
My Buckhannon reported in May on the first $28.56 million in funding opportunities through West Virginia’s participation in the federal Rural Health Transformation Program.
The latest awards came through the program’s SmartCare Catalyst Provider Productivity Support Fund and Mountain State Care Force initiatives. The governor’s office says more awards will follow.
