Statewide death toll from COVID-19 tops 3,500 as active cases tick back up Friday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 16,223 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 1,046 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (275), Barbour (120), Lewis (230), Randolph (168) and Webster (77) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 15 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Thirty-one additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 44-year old female from Upshur County, a 74-year old female from Upshur County, a 64-year old male from Lewis County, a 67-year old male from Wirt County, a 90-year old male from Preston County, a 90-year old male from Greenbrier County, an 80-year old male from McDowell County, a 79-year old female from Braxton County, a 69-year old male from Tyler County, an 80-year old female from Taylor County, a 78-year old male from Mercer County, a 95-year old male from Cabell County, a 59-year old male from Mercer County, a 40-year old female from Ritchie County, a 51-year old male from Hampshire County, a 67-year old female from Mercer County, a 56-year old male from Hampshire County, an 82-year old female from McDowell County, a 71-year old female from Berkeley County, a 51-year old male from Hampshire County, a 57-year old male from Taylor County, a 68-year old female from Putnam County, a 54-year old female from Mingo County, a 55-year old male from Mercer County, an 83-year old female from Mercer County, a 93-year old female from Raleigh County, a 62-year old female from Mineral County, a 54-year old female from Marshall County, a 58-year old male from Logan County, a 28-year old male from Logan County, and a 71-year old male from Logan County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of September 24, 2021, there are currently 16,223 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 31 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 3,523 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 1,005 residents are hospitalized with the virus (81% unvaccinated, 19% vaccinated), with 290 currently in intensive care (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated) and 187 on a ventilator (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 10.78%.

A total of 873,659 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 49% of the state.
