St. Joseph’s Hospital to hold drive-through flu clinic on Wednesday, October 9

St. Joseph’s Hospital will hold a drive-through flu clinic on October 9, offering the community an easy way to receive the vaccine from the comfort of their cars. The clinic will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants can drive up to the hospital and follow directional signage to register and receive their vaccination.

Two vaccines are being offered this year. The trivalent vaccine guards against three strains of flu and is available to those over the age of seven. This three-in-one vaccine will protect against Type A strains called H1N1 and H3N2, and one distinct strain of Type B.

The FLUAD trivalent vaccine is available for those over the age of 65. This vaccine contains four times the amount of antigen as the standard vaccine and may be beneficial for older adults.

There are no out-of-pocket expenses for those with a valid Medicare card. For all others, the cost is $30 for the regular trivalent vaccine and $90 for the high dose FLUAD vaccine. Those with Medicare should be prepared to show their card when registering for the vaccine. For those paying, cash or check will be accepted.

People should begin getting vaccinated soon after the flu vaccine becomes available to ensure the greatest possible protection before flu season begins. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the influenza virus.

Vaccination is extremely important for young children, people 65 and older, pregnant women, those with existing medical conditions, and people in contact with those at greatest risk. Vaccinations will be available at the clinic for anyone over the age of 7. For vaccinations for children under the age of 7, parents should contact their family physician.
