Softball Lady ‘Cats blank Notre Dame twice for doubleheader sweep

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team reached double-digit MEC wins with a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame College on Sunday. The Lady Bobcats run ruled the Falcons in the first game 8-0 and shutout NDC once again in game two 6-0. Morgan Norris hit three home runs and had knocked in eight runs on the day, including a grand slam in game one.

Game 1
The Falcons kicked off the game with a double to right but Hannah Hudson was able to get out of the early jam. Hallie Dinklocker singled and got to second on a passed ball. She then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Taylor Swartz and was brought home on an RBI single from Norris. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Norris singled to set up Andie Dizon who doubled to bring her in, making it 2-0 after three innings.

A six-run fourth inning busted the game wide open for the Lady Bobcats, batting around in the inning. Savannah O’Shields squeezed Megan McMackin home and Swartz got Kaitlyn Rizor home due to an error by the second baseman. Norris made the big splash in the inning, hitting a grand slam to left field to widen the Lady Bobcat lead to 8-0. NDC was down to their final at-bats in the top of the fifth and Hudson shut the door as WVWC run ruled the Falcons 8-0 in five innings.

Danielle Fick and Alexi Maciejowski had the only hits for the Falcons. Allison Weilnau took the loss after giving up eight runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk.

Norris was a perfect 3-3 with one home run and knocked in five runs. Swartz, Dizon and Savannah O’Shields all knocked in one run. Hudson picked up her ninth win of the season with five innings of work, surrendering two hits and striking out six.

Game 2
Kendall Stoffel struck out the side in the top of the first and struck out another batter in the top of the second. The Lady Bobcat bats were quiet early on as well, going hitless through the first three innings of play and the only baserunner was Kiley Tuner on a walk in the second.

Offense struck in the bottom of the fourth when Norris hit her second home run of the day, blasting it over the left-center field fence and bringing Swartz home with her after she led the inning off getting hit by a pitch. From there, Dizon singled hard through the left side of the infield and Alyssa Souders got on due to an error by the left fielder. Rizor took full advantage of the extra at-bat, hitting a three-run home run to left to make it 5-0 after four innings.

NDC loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with two hits and an error but a groundout through the middle ended the inning for the Falcons, leaving with nothing. Norris continued her big day at the dish in the bottom of the fifth, knocking out her second home run of the game and third of the day to extend the Lady Bobcat lead to 6-0. Two singles by the Falcons made things interesting in the top of the seventh with one out until Stoffel was able to produce back-to-back groundouts to end the game.

Destany Blake led NDC with two of the four Falcon hits. Grace Fisher was handed her fifth loss of the season after going five innings and giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits and one walk.
Norris was the leader of the offense once again, hitting two home runs and bringing in three. Rizor’s home run and three runs-batted-in scored the other runs for the Lady Bobcats. Stoffel went the distance once again, giving up no runs on four hits and striking out seven.
