Softball Lady ‘Cats begin MEC Tournament play Friday

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference league office announced the seeds and matchups for the opening round of the 2023 MEC Softball Tournament, which will be played May 5-7 at Botetourt Softball Complex in Troutville, Virginia. The eight-team, double-elimination tournament begins on Friday with eight games (first pitch is set for noon).

Fairmont State won the MEC North Division in 2023 with a 21-11 record in league play. As a result, the Falcons will be the division’s top seeded in the tournament. Notre Dame won the head-to-head tiebreaker over Frostburg State to earn the No. 2 seed, while the Bobcats will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed. Both teams finished the regular season with an 18-14 conference record. West Liberty is the fourth seed in the north after finishing the year at 12-20 in conference play.

In the south division, the University of Charleston won the regular season title and earned the No. 1 seed with a 27-5 record in league play. West Virginia Wesleyan (25-7) earned the No. 2 seed, while Davis & Elkins (20-12) will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed. Glenville State, with a 15-17 MEC mark in 2023, enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed in the south.

Friday’s opening round matchups are set with (#1S) Charleston taking on (#4N) West Liberty and (#2N) Notre Dame versus (#3S) Davis & Elkins at noon. The 2:30 p.m. matchups feature (#2S) West Virginia Wesleyan against (#3N) Frostburg State and (#1N) Fairmont State versus (#4S) Glenville State.
