Soccer Lady Bucs roll Liberty, 9-1; takes winning streak to seven

Mallory Hughes (16) scored two goals in a 9-1 victory over Liberty Tuesday evening (Bobbie Hatcher/My Buckhannon).

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Lady Bucs found little resistance from the Liberty Mountaineers in their Big 10 Conference clash Tuesday evening at the high school earning a 9-1 victory.

After opening the season with two tough losses to Morgantown and Greenbrier East, Jason Piacente’s Lady Bucs have now reeled off seven wins in a row to up their record to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the Big 10 Conference.

While Piacente knew his team had a lot of potential heading into the season, he didn’t necessarily see a seven-game winning streak for his squad after their 0-2 start.

“Honestly, I don’t look that far ahead on our schedule,” said Piacente. “I take it game by game; I wasn’t looking at the schedule thinking we could win our next seven but here we are. I think the winning streak has been a huge confidence booster for us and helping us get better.”

Piacente said learning how to control the game has been a huge key for his Lady Bucs during the winning streak.

“I think the key has been understanding how to possess the ball and control the game,” remarked Piacente. “They know how to control a game now. That is something they have learned throughout the course of the season and it’s something we keep getting better and better at. When we are in control, good things happen for us.”

For Buckhannon-Upshur’s leading scorer junior Harley Dean, she agrees that getting their confidence built up has been instrumental for the team during the winning streak.

“I think our confidence has definitely been up and our getting our passes down has helped,” commented Dean. “After our 0-2 start, I’m not sure many of the team saw us putting together a seven-game winning streak.”

Mallory Hughes put the Lady Bucs on the board in the eighth minute with a goal with the assist going to Dean.

Dean found the back of the net three minutes later with an unassisted goal to give the Lady Bucs a 2-0 lead.

Hannah Boyles scored her first of two goals in the 30th minute with an unassisted goal to make it 3-0.

Molly Radabaugh got into the scoring act with a goal in the 34th minute with the assist being credited to Kyleigh Keener.

Kallie Perry wrapped up the first-half scoring for the Lady Bucs with an unassisted goal making it 5-0 at the break.

Boyles tallied her second goal just two minutes into the second half with the assist going to Haley Triplett upping the B-U lead to 6-0.

Hughes got her second goal of the night four minutes later with the assist going to Dean treating the Lady Bucs to a 7-0 advantage.

The game remained at 7-0 for the next 18 minutes until Isabella Rexroad scored off a corner kick by Keener and Dean scored an unassisted goal from the top of the 18 for B-U’s final score in the 68th minute.

Liberty avoided the shutout when Corinne Vilain scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute.

The Lady Bucs owned a 21-2 advantage in shots-in-goal and a 3-1 lead in corner kicks.

Buckhannon-Upshur was guilty of eight fouls while Liberty was called for five.

B-U keeper Kyndal Davis made one save while Liberty goalie Rylee Grey stopped 12 shots.

With the loss, Liberty dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-5 in the Big 10 Conference.

The Lady Bucs will return to action Thursday at Fairmont Senior with a 6 p.m. start time.

“The winning streak has been nice, hopefully we can keep it going,” concluded Piacente.

Fairmont Senior will enter the game with a 2-3-2 record.
