Soccer Lady Bobcats tabbed for fifth in South Division in MEC preseason poll

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Frostburg State University and the University of Charleston have been picked as preseason favorites in the 2024 MEC Women’s Soccer divisional polls.

Frostburg State is picked as the preseason champion in the North Division as they gained 10-first place votes and 50 total points. Frostburg State was the runner-up as season ago in the MEC Women’s Soccer Tournament and earned an NCAA Tournament bid.

Fairmont State tallied 37 total points as they claimed the No. 2 spot in the north. West Liberty (32), Point Park (21) and Wheeling (20) rounded out north division.

In the south, Charleston earned eight-first place votes and tallied 57 total points as they were named preseason favorites. UC won the 2023 MEC Women’s Soccer Tournament Championship as well as earned an NCAA Tournament bid.

West Virginia State (one-first place vote and 49 total points) was picked in the No.2 spot while Concord (two-first place votes and 45 points) came in at the No. 3 spot. The Mountain Lions are coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023.

Glenville State (34), West Virginia Wesleyan (21) and Davis & Elkins (19) rounded out the south division.

The women’s soccer season gets underway on Sept. 5 with five teams in non-conference action. Conference play begins on Sunday, Sept. 15th.

A Beverly woman allegedly ran a stop sign on Main Street in Buckhannon, causing a Dec. 27 crash that involved three vehicles and struck the First Community Bank building, according to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department’s wreck report.

Woman extricated after Route 33 crash near Huddle House; truck driver cited

A Salem woman was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated after a two-vehicle crash on Route 33 north of the Huddle House. Police say a truck driver attempting to cross lanes to turn left was cited for failing to yield.
