Soccer ‘Cats get blanked by Concord in 1-0 loss

Wesleyan men’s soccer suffered a 1-0 home-opener loss to undefeated Concord after Issa El Assal scored in the 86th minute, dropping the Bobcats to 0-3 despite Matteo Marciani’s four saves.

BUCKHANNON — In a tightly contested Mountain East Conference battle at Culpepper Stadium, the Wesleyan men’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to undefeated Concord University on Sunday afternoon. The match marked the home opener for the Bobcats, who fall to 0-3 overall (0-3 MEC) despite a resilient and balanced effort.

The opening 45 minutes saw both sides struggle to create high-percentage scoring opportunities, as the defenses held firm. Wesleyan’s midfield, led by Hayden Dodd, Sante Klosterman, and Vito Stanic, pressed effectively and broke up multiple Concord build-up plays.

Goalkeeper Matteo Marciani continued his strong form, organizing the back line and making a key save in the 19th minute on a shot from Concord’s Raheem Baptiste. Wesleyan’s best chance in the first half came when Erik Rostoen delivered a well-struck ball on target, but Concord’s keeper Miguel Oliveria made the save.

The Bobcats ramped up pressure in the second half, registering four of their five total shots during that period. Klosterman and Aidan Clayton each tested Oliveria with well-placed efforts, and Rostoen added another strong attempt in the 82nd minute that forced a diving save.

Despite Wesleyan’s second-half surge, Concord finally broke through in the 86th minute. Issa El Assal slotted home a low finish following an assist from Ted Roberts, giving the Mountain Lions a late 1-0 advantage they would not relinquish.

Marciani finished the afternoon with four saves, including three in the second half.

The Bobcats travel to Point Park University in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Sept. 17 for a 7:30 matchup with the Pioneers.
