Soccer Bucs play well despite 3-0 loss to regional foe Morgantown

TENNERTON – Despite a 3-0 setback to the 13th-ranked Morgantown Mohigans Tuesday evening in a home contest, Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato was pleased with how his young Buccaneers performed against their regional foe.

“The score doesn’t show how well we played tonight,” remarked Donato. “Morgantown is one of the favorites to come out of our region and for the most part we held our own for 80 minutes. With the exception of two missed marks on a cross and a set piece we kept the ball moving and definitely had the right intent with the ball, but we just didn’t always have the best execution.”

Morgantown took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when James Percifield dribbled around a B-U defender and scored with a shot to the back post.

Morgantown took a 2-0 lead when Cooper Cave scored on a header off of a corner kick.

Morgantown kept that 2-0 advantage at the break.

The lone goal of the second half came with two minutes remaining when Caden Carpenter scored on a header off of a crossing pass.

“The second half, we saw our best chances but unfortunately we couldn’t capitalize on those chances,” noted Donato.

The Bucs were outshot by a 12-5 margin and trailed in corner kicks by a 7-3 count.

Buckhannon-Upshur was guilty of three fouls while Morgantown was called for 11.

B-U keeper Dalton Auvil made nine saves while Morgantown keeper Benjamin Meyer made five saves.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 5-5-4 heading into Thursday’s home game with Philip Barbour.

The game, which will be Senior Night for the Bucs, will start at 7:30 p.m.
