Seven new COVID-19 cases reported in Upshur County on Saturday, a new daily record

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported seven new cases of COVID-19 in Upshur County on Saturday, the largest one-day increase since the pandemic began.

The new cases were among 205 cases announced statewide; Barbour and Randolph counties also reported new cases.

Eleven COVID-19 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. The new numbers should move Upshur into yellow on the school alert map, although the numerous tweaks designed to keep counties green could mean some or all of the new cases are not counted.

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease statewide, according to the DHHR – a 77-year old male from Logan County and a 62-year old female from Logan County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., September 26, 2020, there have been 541,883 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 15,158 total cases and 332 deaths,” according to a press release.

New cases were reported Saturday in Barbour, Berkeley, Cabell, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Grant, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hardy, Harrison, Jefferson, Kanawha, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mercer, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Ohio, Pendleton, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Summers, Taylor, Tucker, Upshur, Wayne, Webster, Wetzel, Wood and Wyoming counties.

The current DHHR tally for Upshur County does not match the number being reported by the Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department because the state did not include some cases reported locally during the week of Sept. 14.

About 3,705 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 11,121 people have recovered and 332 have died. The daily percent positive was 2.71%.
