Seven more COVID-19 deaths reported in West Virginia on Thursday, nine counties now on red or orange alert

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 203 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 64-year old female from Kanawha County, an 86-year old male from Kanawha County, a 95-year old female from Mercer County, a 60-year old female from Kanawha County, a 92-year old female from Kanawha County, a 95-year old male from Randolph County and a 71-year old female from Lincoln County.

Nine counties are now on red or orange alert, according to the DHHR’s tweaked dashboard — Monroe, Monongalia, Kanawha, Mason, Putnam, Fayette, Wayne, Mingo and Logan. Those counties will be unable to start in-person school next week unless their case levels drop.

The daily percent positive Thursday was 5.75%. West Virginia is currently reporting record levels of new cases, active cases and deaths.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., on September 3, 2020, there have been 444,902 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 10,845 total cases and 237 deaths,” according to a press release.

WVU, in their most recent update, reported 35 new cases of COVID-19 with a positive test rate of 13.46%. The school has reported 254 cases to date.

New cases were reported Thursday in Berkeley, Boone, Brooke, Cabell, Calhoun, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Grant, Greenbrier, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lewis, Logan, Marion, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Ohio, Putnam, Raleigh, Ritchie, Taylor, Wayne, Wood and Wyoming counties.

About 2,266 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 8,342 people have recovered and 237 have died.
