Rev. Dr. George Worthy Jenkins

Rev. Dr. George Worthy Jenkins, aged 73, of Buckhannon, WV, passed away peacefully at his home on September 23, 2023.

He was born September 19, 1950, in Clarksburg, WV, son of the late William Coleman and Lola Faye Cobb Jenkins Spore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Spencer Jenkins and his stepfather Virgil “Bud” Spore.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 52 years, Janice Russell Jenkins and two sons, Jonathan Worthy Jenkins and wife Soran, granddaughter Juliet Lee and grandson John Worthy all of Buckhannon and Matthew Miller and wife Adrienne, granddaughter Macey and grandson Caleb all of Shinnston, WV. Also surviving are one sister, Sherry Bailey of Newton Falls, OH and two brothers, Gary Jenkins and wife Sally of Clearwater, FL and Phillip Jenkins and wife Amberle of Buckhannon.

George graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School. He served two years as a medic in the Army branch of the military. Throughout the years George had several occupations but always had a dream of being a truck driver and “GW” spent 30 years hauling coal for various companies in WV. It was during this time that George served as a witness to the Lord, sharing scriptures with miners before they went underground.

In 1995, George finally entered into his real dream and purpose in life: studying and ultimately becoming an ordained minister, receiving his credentials with Faith Evangelistic Alliance in Baltimore, MD. He began his ministry at Hackers Creek Fellowship Church in Buckhannon and in 1997, established The House of Praise, Worship and Learning Center in Buckhannon. In 1998, he became Associate Pastor at the Gospel Barn Assembly with the dearest Pastor and friends, Rev. Jim and Cindy Davis in Stone Coal, WV.

Even further continuing his calling to spread the Lord’s Word, in 2007, George established the Emmanuel Counseling Center in Buckhannon. George was a graduate of Rhema Correspondence Bible School in Tulsa, OK. He earned his B.S. in Christian Counseling and M.A. in Pastoral Counseling from Life Christian University in Tampa, FL. George also obtained a Certificate of Ordination with West Virginia Christian Ministerial Association in Buckhannon and earned his degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Pastoral Counseling at Life Christian University of Tampa and became Board Certified Pastoral Counselor with the International Board of Christian Counseling in Forest, VA. George truly loved serving the Lord and was always joyful in his worship to Him.

George was a devoted Pastor, loving husband and father and the greatest Pappaw/Grandpa ever! He loved spending time with his family and thanked God every day for them. In his words, “God gave him the best family ever!”

Friends will be received Wednesday, September 27, 2023, from 5 PM to 8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. His funeral service will be held 11 AM Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Scott Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Church Cemetery in Hodgesville, WV. The Upshur County Honor Guard along with the WV Army National Guard Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the graveside.
