Number of active COVID cases in West Virginia continues to creep up, DHHR reports Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 799 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 80 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (11), Barbour (8), Lewis (1), Randolph (12) and Webster (0) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of two active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Four additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 85-year old male from Kanawha County, a 91-year old female from Kanawha County, a 72-year old female from Nicholas County, and an 86-year old female from Kanawha County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of April 28, 2022, there are currently 799 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 4 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,855 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 91 residents are hospitalized with the virus (58% unvaccinated, 42% vaccinated), with 23 currently in intensive care (52% unvaccinated, 48% vaccinated) and 12 on a ventilator (42% unvaccinated, 58% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 3.28%. 

A total of 973,857 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 465,641 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
