New COVID-19 cases in West Virginia spike on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 431 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State, the largest daily increase in nearly two weeks but still well below the highs of a month ago.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (8), Barbour (3), Lewis (6), Randolph (6) and Webster (3) counties.

A total of 109 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. The Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department, however, last reported just 43 active cases.

Five additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 73-year old male from Kanawha County, a 65-year old female from Brooke County, a 66-year old male from Summers County, an 84-year old male from Tucker County, and a 77-year old male from Raleigh County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of February 25, 2021, there have been 2,147,276 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 130,813 total cases and 2,290 total deaths,” according to a press release.

About 8,020 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 120,503 people have recovered and 2,290 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.52%.

A total of 175,181 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
