The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 1,139 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.
Twenty-nine deaths were also reported, including a 75-year-old woman from Barbour County. The number of new cases and deaths Tuesday were the largest statewide increases in more than a week. The weekly average number of new cases ticked up but remains at levels well below those seen at the start of the month.
Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (15), Barbour (15), Lewis (16), Randolph (26) and Webster (5) counties. A total of 236 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.
The DHHR, however, continues to underreport more than 300 cases in Upshur County, according to numbers released by the local health department.
Twenty-nine additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR:

- an 84-year old male from Mingo County,
- an 80-year old male from Kanawha County,
- an 82-year old male from Berkeley County,
- a 69-year old female from Mercer County,
- a 78-year old male from Greenbrier County,
- an 89-year old female from Berkeley County,
- an 83-year old female from Greenbrier County,
- an 83-year old male from Raleigh County,
- a 78-year old male from Jackson County,
- a 70-year old male from Berkeley County,
- an 86-year old male from Mercer County,
- a 73-year old female from Kanawha County,
- an 80-year old female from Fayette County,
- an 87-year old female from Mercer County,
- a 74-year old male from Monongalia County,
- a 79-year old male from Berkeley County,
- a 63-year old male from Lincoln County,
- an 84-year old female from Berkeley County,
- a 75-year old female from Barbour County,
- a 92-year old female from Ohio County,
- a 76-year old male from Morgan County,
- an 81-year old female from Taylor County,
- a 65-year old female from Mercer County,
- a 96-year old female from Wood County,
- a 46-year old male from Kanawha County,
- a 93-year old female from Mercer County,
- a 77-year old female from Monongalia County,
- a 70-year old female from Monongalia County.
“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of January 26, 2021, there have been 1,857,255 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 116,978 total cases and 1,928 total deaths,” according to a press release.
About 24,175 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 90,875 people have recovered and 1,928 have died. The daily percent positive was 7.02%.
A total of 43,648 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
“West Virginians may now pre-register for their COVID-19 vaccination at vaccinate.wv.gov. Those who have already been placed on a waitlist through their local health department or other medical provider, as well as those who have already received their first vaccine dose, will be integrated into this new system and do not need to pre-register,” according to the DHHR.
