Naylor goal stands up as soccer ‘Cats down West Liberty, 1-0

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan (7-7-2, 5-7-2) men’s soccer team defeated the West Liberty Hilltoppers (6-10-0, 5-9-0) by a final score of 1-0 on Sunday.

The Wesleyan defensive pairing was strong all night as the Bobcats kept their fourth clean sheet of the season.

In the first half, WVWC provided constant pressure on the Hilltopper defensive third in the early moments of the half, leading to an eventual corner kick in the ninth minute.

Connor Hartwell took the set piece and delivered a cross to the head of an airborne Charlie Naylor, who gave the Hilltopper keeper no chance by depositing his third goal of the season.

Looking to add to the Bobcat lead was Tanner Amos in the 19th minute. Amos worked himself into the penalty area, but was unable to beat the outstretched arms of Noah Underwood.

WLU only registered one shot on Bobcat keeper Sahil Dhunnookchand due to the defensive masterpiece displayed by Isaac BranchLuis Diaz and Naylor.

The trio stymied Hilltopper chances all night en route to a critical three points in Mountain East Conference play.

WVWC is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 3 in Maryland to take on the Bobcats from Frostburg State.

The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
