Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital recognized for top patient care

WESTON, W.Va. – Making a difference in the lives our patients and our community is our top priority at Mon Health. At Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital (SJMH), this excellent and personable care was recognized as number one in West Virginia by the Lown Institute in several hospital categories. The Institute Hospital Index not only measures how well hospitals care for their patients but also gauges the contributions hospitals make to their communities.

The Institute awarded an A+ rating and first place in West Virginia for SJMH’s civic leadership, which reflects the Hospital’s commitment to equity, inclusion and community health.  The Weston healthcare facility also took another A+ and first place in the state for the value of care for patients.

SJMH Chief Operating Officer Kevin Stalnaker related, “We are pleased that Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital (SJMH) was ranked first in these categories by the Lown Institute. Our mission has always been to provide excellent care and this study analyzed patient outcomes, the value of care provided and civic leadership.  Patient outcomes are paramount.  SJMH has been scored by CMS yearly and found to have very good patient outcomes also.  The staff at SJMH know that the patient is our primary concern and the focus of what we do. We will continue to offer excellent care which results in patient satisfaction.”

The Lown Institute created this type of hospital ranking for a good reason, noting, “For too long, oversimplified ranking systems have rewarded only certain types of hospitals–while neglecting those that excel at advancing equity in their communities and delivering high-value care. No longer. The Lown Index is the first hospital ranking to measure value of care, racial and economic inclusivity, pay equity, and more. In all, we measure across 42 metrics that fall into three major categories: Civic Leadership, Value of Care, and Patient Outcomes.”

Mon Health SJMH Chair, Robin Poling noted, “Being ranked #1 for small hospitals in WV shows that here in Weston we are performing at the highest level for civic leadership and community benefit and value of patient care.   This is why we do what we do every day, for every patient, every time!  Of course, there is always room for improvement.   People’s lives depend on hospitals making the right decisions.  The Lown Institute Hospital Index was developed to make sure we are guided by the most relevant tools possible, tools that measure what matters.  The Board of Director of SJMH is very proud of this achievement.”

More than 400 staff members are employed by SJMH, which has an integral role in the regional economy.  Staff members come from Braxton, Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis, Marion, Randolph, and Upshur counties to name a few.

As well as one of the Best Safety Net Hospitals in America, SJMH has also been honored with a number of other designations in the past year including:

  • U.S. News & World Report Top Hospital for Patient Experience
  • Gold WV Hospital Association Honors Program
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services 3-Star Hospital
