FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Mountain East Conference announced today that it will sponsor women’s wrestling as its 24th conference championship sport, beginning with the 2026-27 academic year.
The MEC Board of Directors approved women’s wrestling as the league’s newest championship sport at its September meeting, following the NCAA’s addition of women’s wrestling on Jan. 17, 2025.
“We are very pleased to add women’s wrestling as the Mountain East Conference’s 24th sport,” said MEC Commissioner Reid Amos. “Since 2013, we have grown from 16 sports to now 24, providing a tremendous increase in opportunities for student-athletes across our campuses. Women’s wrestling is growing very quickly, and we are proud to support that growth of opportunities for women, beginning with an inaugural MEC Championship this academic year.”
Six Mountain East Conference institutions currently field women’s wrestling programs, including: Concord University, Fairmont State University, Frostburg State University, Point Park University, Wheeling University, and West Liberty University.
These six institutions will compete at the inaugural MEC Women’s Wrestling Championship on Saturday, January 30, 2027, hosted by Glenville State University at the Waco Center in Glenville, West Virginia.
The addition comes during a period of significant growth for women’s wrestling at the collegiate level. The NCAA held its inaugural Women’s Wrestling NCAA Championship in March of 2026, featuring competitors from all three NCAA divisions.add
