Marshall University declines Independence Bowl invitation, cites player health concerns

Marshall University issued a statement over the weekend after declining their invitation to participate in the Independence Bowl:

“At Marshall University, we pride ourselves on a rich tradition of excellence, resilience and unwavering commitment. In 2024, our football program achieved an extraordinary milestone, claiming its first Sun Belt Conference championship. This historic victory places the Thundering Herd among an elite group of programs nationwide to win championships in three different conferences – a testament to the talent, dedication, and resilience of our athletic staff, student-athletes, coaches and community. The Herd followed this success with an invitation to the prestigious Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, promising an exciting matchup against Army, a top 25 program.”

“Today we are making the difficult decision to decline our invitation to participate in the Independence Bowl. Recent changes in the status of key personnel, when combined with the implications of the shifting landscape of college athletics including NIL and the transfer portal, have significantly impacted our team’s roster. At this moment, our football program’s participation numbers create a major concern for the health and safety of our current student athletes to compete in a safe, viable manner.”

“Although a tough and unimaginable decision for a program with such tradition and pride, after consulting with our independent medical experts, coaches and players, we reached this decision and emphatically believe this is the best decision for our student athletes. The health and well-being of our players is our top priority.”

“We regret the impact this has had on those involved. We extend our deepest apologies to the U.S. Military Academy for any disruption or disappointment. Army’s football program embodies the highest values of discipline, honor and service, and competing against such a distinguished opponent is a privilege. We wish Army much continued success.”

“We wish to thank the Sun Belt Conference, the American Athletic Conference and the Independence Bowl for their consideration and understanding as we navigated this important decision together in support of player health and safety.”

“This decision does not diminish the pride we feel in this year’s Sun Belt Championship winning team. The 2024 season was a direct reflection of the character and resiliency of our student athletes and the proud tradition at Marshall University. We are optimistic about the future of Thundering Herd football and excited to welcome new Head Coach Tony Gibson, a proven leader who is already hard at work assembling a talented roster and first-class coaching staff. His philosophy of seeing opportunities in obstacles is the vision that promises a new era in Thundering Herd football.”

“Finally, we wish to thank our fans, alumni, and community for their understanding and unwavering support as we move forward to an exciting new chapter together. Forever, We Are … Marshall!”
