West Virginia University issued this statement on the passing of Marvin Wotring, who has made every rifle carried by the school’s Mountaineer Mascot since 1977:
Mountaineers everywhere mourn the Dec. 2 passing of Marvin Wotring, who created every rifle carried by West Virginia University’s Mountaineer Mascot since 1977.
Marvin’s shop was one of the very first stops for every new Mountaineer and alternate Mountaineer, and he forged a close relationship with each one, teaching them how to load, shoot and care for their rifles, which have been passed down from mascot to mascot. Replicas are requested by WVU alumni and fans across the country.
Not only will his skill be missed, but so will his friendship and caring. The University extends its condolences to his family at this time.
