Lewis County man among the COVID-19 deaths reported Monday as cases continue to surge

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 2,480 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 423 since the last report, the largest jump since January.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (28), Barbour (13), Lewis (38), Randolph (28) and Webster (55) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of two active cases.

Three additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 85-year-old male from Fayette County, a 78-year-old male from Lewis County, and a 78-year-old female from Logan County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of August 2, 2021, there have been 3,133,703 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 167,681 total cases and 2,949 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 6.41%.

A total of 881,345 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said. That’s about 49% of the state.
