Lady Buc netters fall to Liberty and University

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc tennis team had one of their better outings last Tuesday in a 5-2 setback at home to the Liberty Mountaineers.

They followed that up with a 7-0 loss on the road to University.

Picking up the two wins against Liberty were Madelyn Frye downing Hannah Davis at No. 3 singles (8-2) and Alexa Davis beating Olivia Johnson at No 4 singles (9-7).

“I was happy that Madelyn and Alexa got a few wins for us in singles,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “Those girls have worked hard and kept having fun throughout the season so I’m happy they got wins. Sammie Shay did a great job subbing in at No. 3 doubles.”

“I think some of our girls have better shot-making ability than Liberty’s girls, but we lost a few matches because of things like positioning and movement,” Rock added. “I tell the ladies on every changeover, every match ‘move your feet’ because it’s definitely a weakness for most of the ladies. Personally, I was a little disappointed because I think our girls should have won as a team, but it was great having competitive matches for every matchup and ultimately, we got a few wins under our belt.”

The Lady Bucs struggled against a powerful Hawk team.

“Our girls had a rough evening… University girls are insanely good,” noted Rock. “A bright spot was the No. 3 doubles’ play. Mya Critchfield and Alexis Davis are both first-year players but they were rallying with their opponents and had some great points. Both are still learning a lot of the ins and outs of tennis, but I think if those two girls stick with it, they both have the potential to be pretty good players.”

The action left the Lady Bucs with a 0-6 mark.

Their contest with Fairmont Senior on Thursday was postponed. They will be back on the courts Monday at John Marshall and will return home Wednesday hosting North Marion.
