Julia Ann Sweeney

Julia Ann Sweeney, 89, of Cartersville, Ga., was sent on her way on Friday, December 11, 2020.

She was born in Sutton, West Virginia, on January 30, 1931, to the late Vernon and Ruth Fisher Bail.

Julia loved knitting, reading, and playing bridge with her friends. She also loved spending time on the computer – she was known to message her grandchildren on AOL and write her letters in Word Perfect long before many of her contemporaries. An accomplished swimmer since childhood, she continued swimming until the last weeks of her life. She passed her love of water and swimming on to many of her grandchildren.

Julia met her husband, the late Donald Sweeney, Sr., while she was at West Virginia Wesleyan College. After they married, they lived all over the country, including in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Illinois, before finally settling in Georgia.

She was a loving wife, mother of six, grandmother of fourteen, great grandmother of six, beloved aunt and great-aunt to many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Sweeney, Sr., son Mark Vernon Sweeney, daughter-in-law Rene’ Sweeney, brother John Bail, and sister-in-law Patricia Bail.

Julia is survived by her four sons: Donald II (Jill), Gary (Lorena), Scott (Bonnie), and Jeff (Shelley) Sweeney; daughter, Lisa (Chris) Hereth; fourteen grandchildren: Caryn Sweeney, Scott (Katie) Sweeney, Ryan (Lauren) Sweeney, Katherine (Eric) Yeasted, Kevin (Mei) Sweeney, Kara (Dan) Bac, Lyndsay Sweeney, Kirsten (Chris) Helwig, Cameron Sweeney, Kasey (Emily) Sweeney, Korey Sweeney, Savanna (Joey) Garde, Diana Sweeney, and Hannah Hereth; and six great grandchildren: Taylor Russell, Hunter Richardson, Cora Helwig, Sloane Sweeney, Brynlee Bac, Kinley Helwig.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at Clutter Funeral and Cremation located at 21 Elnora Circle in Buckhannon from 10-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2020. A Graveside Service will be held at Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon at 11 a.m. on Saturday with Reverend Robert Anderson officiating.
