Buckhannon to honor local heroes Tuedsay with Veterans Day parade and community events

Buckhannon will honor local veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 11, with the annual Veterans Day parade, a Jawbone Park ceremony and free meals for veterans and their families.

On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the Buckhannon community will come together to honor the men and women who have served our nation with a full slate of Veterans Day events — including the annual parade, a special ceremony at Jawbone Park and free meals for local veterans and their families.

The annual Veterans Day Parade will kick off from the Charles W. Gibson Library at 105 E. Main Street. Lineup begins at 8:30 a.m., with the parade stepping off at 9:45 a.m. Veterans and their spouses are invited to ride on the American Legion float — a tractor-trailer decorated in red, white and blue with the Legion banner. Participants can bring their own chair or use one provided on the float.

Following the parade, the community is invited to gather at Jawbone Park at 11 a.m. for a Veterans Day program recognizing the service and sacrifice of local veterans and their families.

Earlier that morning, the Buckhannon Elks Lodge, located at 47 North Kanawha Street, will host a free Veterans Day Breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m.

After the parade and ceremony, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663, located at 12 South Kanawha Street, will serve a free lunch at noon. The meal is open to all area veterans and their immediate families, sponsored by VFW Post 3663 and the Auxiliary.

Local restaurants are also joining in the show of gratitude — the Route 20 Diner announced that it will offer free meals to all veterans on Tuesday as a token of appreciation for their service.

Veterans Day has long been an important tradition in Buckhannon and throughout Upshur County. Local veterans’ organizations have held ceremonies and parades for decades to salute those who served.

Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday commemorated the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. In 1954, Congress renamed it Veterans Day to honor all U.S. military veterans.
