John Michael “Mike” Whitehair

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of John Michael Whitehair, who passed on May 8, 2026, after battling lung cancer. John, known as Mike, was born to the late John Whitehair and Bessie Whitehair on September 5, 1948.

After attending Buckhannon-Upshur High School, Mike served his country in the Navy until 1969 and worked as a coal miner for over 35 years. Amongst all the hats Mike wore, his favorite was undoubtedly his “family man” hat. To his wife, he was the pillar who stood steadfast through every season of life. To his children, he was the role model they aspired to follow. To his grandchildren, he was an unwavering supporter, celebrating every accomplishment with pride. But to all, he was a friend—a very best friend.

Wherever Mike was, so was laughter, a kind heart, and an unmistakable feeling of warmth. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Rose Whitehair; his children, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Whitehair, N. Shane (Aimee) Whitehair, and M. Todd (Alison) Whitehair; grandchildren, Taylor (Cassidy) Whitehair, Logan Whitehair, Alayna Whitehair, Ella and Emelia Whitehair; and step-grandchildren, Lindsay Quattro (and family) and Mallory Moss. Mike was preceded in death by his son, John Michael Whitehair Jr.

All of those who had the pleasure of knowing Mike knew that he would not want his loved ones to weep, but to come together and celebrate the times they shared together with him. Please join us to celebrate Mike Monday, May 11, 2026, from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Ed Lowther officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon.

Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
