BUCKHANNON – The annual Green Bean Stroll is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year as it continues its mission to promote agriculture and gather food for the Parish House.
Dr. Joseph Reed attended the July 30 Upshur County Commission meeting to ask community members to help provide green beans for the project.
“August 8 is coming up soon. The purpose of this Green Bean Stroll is to get food for the Parish House, recognize volunteer organizations, promote nutrition and exercise, promote agriculture, and have fun,” Reed said. “We accomplish all those with just a couple hours of activity and encourage anyone and everyone to come and join us.”
The stroll will take place Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, at 9 a.m. at the Elizabeth J. Poundstone Riverwalk Trail.
“I think it’s important that we acknowledge all the volunteer organizations who have stepped up. The county, the city, the state have responded to our needs, and I think that they’re all to be commended for what they have done,” Reed said. “We must continue being supportive of the needs of our community.”
The county commission recognized the event with an official proclamation:
Whereas, recognizing that hunger still exists in Upshur County and in Buckhannon; and whereas, recognizing that green beans are a productive and nutritious vegetable crop that is easily grown and harvested; and
Whereas, acknowledging that the many activities are a success in our fair city and county because of the multitude of volunteers who are the catalyst and workers in these activities;
Now, therefore, the Upshur County Commission does hereby proclaim August 8, 2026, as the TENTH ANNUAL GREEN BEAN AND VOLUNTEERISM WEEKEND;
And urge all citizens of our City & County to grow green beans, snap them, and deliver them to the Parish House to help feed those who are in nutritional need this year and the next.
We invite all to the Green Bean Stroll on August 8, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the Elizabeth J. Poundstone Riverwalk Trail to walk, run, ride a wheelbarrow, stroller, wheelchair, electric scooter for the handicapped, or any other non-motorized transportation to celebrate activity.
Come and hear about Teenie Weenie Green Beanie, The Good Giant: Chapter 3, “Growing green beans in space,” and hear the bagpipes by Marvin Carr.
Sponsorship provided by the Upshur County Parish House and Create Buckhannon.
Signed this 30th day of July, 2026.
