Fred Brooks Garden Club to hold annual May plant sale and auction on Monday, May 4

The Fred Brooks Garden Club reminds folks to get their yards ready for the Strawberry Yard of the Month and attend the annual May plant sale and auction on Monday.

The Yard of the Month year begins with the Strawberry Yard of the Month. Buckhannon residents should have their best strawberry decorations out by April 30 for judging on May 1.

District judges will be checking each city district for one outstanding strawberry yard. Yards should also be mowed and trimmed, along with bedding flowers, containers and hanging baskets.

On Monday, May 4, the Fred Brooks Garden Club begins good-weather activities with its annual Plant Sale & Auction at Jawbone Park. The auction begins at 6 p.m., along with a Cash & Carry table with small plants and gardening items.

Auction items include plants from members’ gardens and greenhouses. The public is welcome to attend and take home something lovely for their green spaces.

On May 6 and 7, garden club members and Delta Kappa Gamma sisters will help Upshur County Schools’ second graders plant classroom-raised marigolds in public spaces. The organizations thank Jeanne Bennett for leading this project, which gives the students an opportunity to raise their flowers and share them with the community.

The Conservation, Education & Youth Committee will begin its summer gardening program at Stockert Youth Center during Camp Buccaneer, including maintaining two beds at the Community Garden. Fred Brooks Garden Club will also be selling plants and garden items at the first Festival Friday of each month.

The garden club also reminds residents to visit Upshur County Public Library to get free seeds from its seed catalog. Patrons can take 10 packs of seeds each visit.

The Fred Brooks Garden Club maintains a Facebook group with announcements, gardening advice and gardening pictures.
