Four Bobcats earn MEC All-Conference soccer honors

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Four members of the West Virginia Wesleyan men’s soccer team were honored in the All-Mountain East Conference awards, the conference revealed Tuesday (Nov. 1).

Istanbul, Turkey striker Sinasi Emre Deniz won All-MEC First Team honors after scoring nine goals during his senior campaign. Deniz led the Bobcats in goals, shots, shots on goals and points.

Graduate student Luis Diaz’s defensive skills earned him a spot on the All-MEC First Team. Diaz, a Los Angeles, Calif. native chipped in a goal versus Charleston on Oct. 16 and helped WVWC earn three clean sheets. This was Diaz’s second time being named to an all-conference team, as he collected Second Team All-MEC honors his sophomore season in 2019.

Freshman Sam Newell was named All-MEC Second Team and to the All-MEC Freshman Team. The Nottingham, England midfielder tallied 13 points in his first collegiate season, which included four goals and five assists. Newell’s five assists led all WVWC players.

Wesleyan midfielder Hunter Dierlam received All-MEC Honorable Mention accolades. The Sacramento, Calif. native scored a trio of goals versus Concord on Sept. 14. Dierlam started in 16 contests and racked up four goals and an assist.
