Editor’s note: My Buckhannon’s newest correspondent Lily Hicks shares a first-hand account of a treasured family tradition — picking blueberries at Floral Acres U-Pick Farm.

FRENCH CREEK — As someone who grew up in Buckhannon, blueberry picking at Floral Acres U-Pick Blueberry Farm holds a special place in my heart as a cherished family tradition.

Blueberry picking in the summertime has been a yearly activity for my parents, siblings, and me for as long as I can remember. It’s the perfect, family-friendly thing to do on a nice day.

Each time we make our way to Floral Acres, the anticipation of handpicking ripe blueberries fills the air. It’s more than just a simple activity; it’s a bonding experience that has brought us closer as a family over the years. In fact, I still remember those childhood days when my siblings and I would squeal with delight as we filled our baskets with plump, juicy berries, competing to see who could gather the most. Our parents normally join in on the fun too. It’s these shared moments that make the experience truly special and create lasting memories that we treasure.

When we arrive at Floral Acres, we are always warmly greeted. Floral Acres provides us with picking baskets, and they normally offer useful tips to ensure we have a successful harvest. It doesn’t matter if we’re seasoned pickers or first-timers; the farm is open to everyone, and the atmosphere is inviting and welcoming. At just $3 a pint, the price is unbeatable, and the memories made are priceless in themselves.

Whether you’re locals like us, seeking to preserve your family traditions, or a traveler looking for an authentic and family-friendly adventure, I highly recommend visiting Floral Acres Blueberry Farm near Buckhannon. It’s an idyllic way to spend a summer day with your family.
