Fairmont State University is saddened to share the news of the passing of alumnus and former West Virginia Sen. Larry J. Edgell.
In addition to being a graduate of Fairmont State College (now Fairmont State University), he was a lifelong educator, U.S. Navy veteran and dedicated public servant whose career reflected a deep commitment to West Virginia and its people.
“Larry Edgell was the embodiment of the values we hold dear at Fairmont State: service, integrity, and leadership,” said Fairmont State University President Mike Davis. “We aspire for every graduate to lead with purpose and make a lasting impact on their communities, just as Larry did throughout his life. As an alumnus, educator, veteran, and legislator, he dedicated himself to advancing opportunities for others and strengthening the fabric of our state. His legacy of leadership and his profound influence on West Virginia will endure as an inspiration to the entire Fairmont State University family.”
Edgell served in the West Virginia Senate from 1998 to 2014, representing the Second Senatorial District with distinction for nearly two decades. In January 2013, he was named State Senate President Pro Tempore, a role he held until the conclusion of his tenure. During his legislative career, he also served as Majority Whip, playing a key role in guiding policy and advancing legislation on behalf of his constituents.
His commitment to public service began long before his time in the State Senate. Edgell previously served as a member of the New Martinsville City Council from 1966 to 1970, demonstrating early in his career a dedication to civic engagement and community leadership.
Edgell’s contributions to West Virginia were widely recognized and respected across the state. In a statement, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey said, “Senator Edgell devoted nearly two decades of his life to serving the people of West Virginia, representing his community with integrity, humility, and a steadfast commitment to the public good. A proud veteran, educator, and legislator, he exemplified the very best of public service. Whether in the classroom, in uniform, or in the halls of the Capitol, he worked tirelessly to expand opportunity and improve the lives of others. His legacy of service to the Mountain State will be long remembered.”
Edgell passed away on Christmas Eve.
Fairmont State University extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, former colleagues and all those whose lives were touched by Edgell. His legacy of service and leadership will continue to inspire future generations of Falcons.
