Elkins Raceway Fall Festival 50 and racing season concludes

KERENS – Dirt track drivers at Elkins Raceway unloaded their cars Saturday for the last time this season for the Fall Festival 50 Championship races.

The atmosphere of the track was truly bittersweet Saturday. On one hand: excitement grew for the drop of the green flag, the upcoming large payout and fireworks display. On the other hand: the air of Randolph County was somber, knowing the racing season came to a close at the end of the night.

All eyes were fixed on the checkered flag as drivers saw an increased payout in all classes – $3,000 for Super Late Model drivers, $1,200 for FASTRAK Crate Late Models, $1,100 for UMP Modifieds, $500 to Street Stocks and $800 to EDGE Hot Mods.

During the playing of the National Anthem, a special ceremony was held in memory of EDGE Hot Mod driver, Larry Atha. Fellow drivers of the EDGE Hot Mod and mini wedge divisions congregated on the front stretch of the track while carrying American flags. Drivers made one lap in memory of Atha.

Looking back on a action-packed season, Mac McDougal and the Skidmore family would like to thank fans for a great racing season.

“What a great year we have had in Elkins Raceway, celebrating 70 years in the rolling hills of Elkins, West Virginia,” said Jimmy Henry, announcer at Elkins Raceway. “Record crowds on hand to see some of the best racing in North Central West Virginia. Many sponsors and racing friends have joined together to make each Saturday night a very special event.”
