Early turnovers hurt B-U in 71-38 loss to University

MORGANTOWN – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs never gave themselves a chance in their non-conference outing with the Class AAAA No. 10 University Hawks Tuesday night.

The Lady Bucs turned the ball over on eight of their first 10 possessions and went down by a 13-0 score en route to a 71-38 setback.

B-U’s first basket didn’t come until the 4:04 mark of the first quarter when Hodge’Nay Henderson made a baseline jumper making it a 13-2 contest.

B-U turned the ball over 11 times in the first quarter and trailed by a 24-9 score heading into the second quarter. The Lady Bucs had just 14 turnovers the rest of the game.

Buckhannon-Upshur managed just three field goals in the second quarter and trailed at the half by a 41-16 score.

Down 55-20 late in the third quarter, Harley Dean scored on a short jumper, Brooklyn Smith canned a three-pointer, and after a University basket, Casadie Lahman uncorked a three-pointer to put B-U down 57-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

Trailing 61-31, Alyssa Abel scored on an outside jumper and Lahman knocked down another three for a 5-0 B-U run making it 61-36.

University closed the game with a 10-2 run.

Hannah Stemple led University with 17 points while Ella Simpson tallied 12 points.

The Hawks are still under the .500 mark despite their ranking as they improved to 7-8 on the year.

Lahman paced the B-U offense with 12 points while Abel had a team-high six rebounds.

The loss dropped the Lady Bucs to 2-9 on the year.

They will be back in action Saturday hosting Robert C. Byrd at 3 p.m.
